Wordless Wednesday – Fall Containers

Purple Violas & Yellow Chrysantheums

Bloomin’ Tuesday

Profusion Zinnias & Sweet Alyssum

I’m pretty pleased with how this container looks since I just scattered some seeds of White & Yellow Profusion Zinnias and Sweet Alyssum and the arrangement is perfect. 🙂

Unknown Asiatic Lily with Liatris

Now talk about a complimentary color combination,  hot orange Asiatic Lilies and deep purple Liatris make a striking  presence together.

Rosa 'Peace' and Drumstick Alliums

I hope the Daylily ‘Colorful Summer’ that is in bud (right behind the Drumstick Alliums) open soon.  They should look pretty combined with the Alliums.  That Pink ‘Peace’ Rose is pretty as well.  Oops I missed some deadheading this week.

Echinacea 'Sundown'

Look how many blooms are on the Echinacea ‘Sundown’ right now!  So happy with this perennial coneflower.  To see more Bloomin’ Tuesday posts or to join in this week please visit our host Jean @Ms Greenthumb.

Bloomin’ Tuesday

(From upper L-R across & down: Scillia hispanica with Candytuft, white Dianthus, Vinca major Variegata, pink Dianthus, Scillia hispanica Alba and Scilla non-scripta or English Bluebells)

Well it’s that time of the week again when we show what’s blooming in our gardens.  Some new blooms for me this week include this charming little Scilla hispanica or Spanish Bluebell as it’s commonly called.  I have tons of the blue form and it also comes in a pink variety as well.  But I really love this white flowering type known as ‘Alba’ which is a bit more petite in stature than the typical blue one. The vining Vinca major is starting to bloom in the hanging containers on my shed.  I keep this aggressive creeper in check by containing it in pots.  It overwinters in these plastic planters and occasionally I repot it after cutting back the rootball and putting in fresh potting mix.  The variegated foliage looks great all season even after it stops blooming.  Plus it gives some interest to that blank shed wall that faces the garden. Grandma has the English Bluebells which are actually more of a lavender blue shade growing in her garden bed.  Their smaller in size than the Spanish Bluebells and the flowers are a more pastel tone.  More blooms from her garden bed include both of these Dianthus.  They love our cooler spring temps and will rebloom again in the fall after going dormant through the summer months.  Well that’s what is blooming in my garden this week.  To see more Bloomin’ Tuesday posts or to join in on the fun this week, please visit our gracious host Jean Ms Greenthumb.

Amaryllis ‘Apple Blossom’

I bought this Amaryllis as part of a kit last Christmas for my Grandmother.  Somehow it got misplaced all year and she found it this past weekend.  Fortunately the bulb still seemed healthy with some signs of life.  Figured I would give it a try so I potted it up and put it on the mantle.  Crossing my fingers for some blooms come early spring.  Click here to see what a pretty bloom it makes.  Here’s some more info on this bulb:

  • Gets to be 18-24″ tall (wow I need to stick a stake in the pot)
  • Hardy in zones 7a-11 (yay it’s hardy outdoors here!)
  • Prefers Sun – Partial shade
  • All parts of this plant are poisonous ( if ingested!)
  • Pale pink to white blooms
  • Blooms late winter thru early summer
  • Fragrant so it attracts bees & butterflies
  • Suitable to grow indoors and outdoors
  • Deer resistant
  • Do not overwater (or bulb will rot)
  • Propagate by dividing offsets or seed

Fall Activities

I’ve already started preparing for the next seaon in the garden.  Some of the activities I’ve completed include cutting back and thinning out the Obedient Plant in my red washtub.  I do this every year and then plant Pansies which will last until next May when the heat sets in again.  Another thing I’ve been doing is ordering bulbs that will be planted by mid November.  When I was at Lowe’s a week or so ago I picked up some Allium bulbs.

I loved the name they gave this pairing of  Nigrum and Atropurpureum alliums.   Of couse I was a bit hungry at the time of purchase so maybe the idea of Raspberry & Creme attracted my tastebuds.  😉  Won’t they make a pretty combination in the garden next year?  In addition while at Wally World the other day I also picked up some Narcissus ‘Ice Follies’ for a bargain price of $3.00 for eight bulbs.  You can never have too many Daffodils in my opinion.

note: My Mom is coming into town tonight and will be visiting for the week.  I won’t be posting so that I can enjoy her visit.  Have a nice week everyone,  catch you all later.  🙂
