Vegetable Garden (spring 2010)

The Garden with Bean seedlings , Tomato blossoms and squash seedlings

Here’s a sneak peak at the newly planted veggie garden this spring.  The tomatoes and bell peppers are doing pretty well so far despite these cool mornings & evenings.  This has been planted since the 2nd week of April.  I also have Purple Podded Beans, Cucumbers and Sweet Banana peppers planted.  Need to get some more potting soil for a couple of large containers so I can plant some Basil seed and maybe some other herbs.   Hubby was going to make me a couple more raised beds last fall but we never got around to it.  That’s why these large blue tubs (sneak peak with the squash seedlings) come in handy.  What do you have started for your vegetable patch this season?  We have family visiting this week so I’ll be sporatically online today.  Have a nice day!  🙂

  1. Good morning, your new raised beds look very nice. I’ll bet they will be very easy to take care of. Can’t believe you have blooms on your tomatoes already. We are still getting frost here so mine aren’t even in the ground yet.

    Marnie

Good afternoon Marnie. Thank you, they are quite easy to take care of, mainly keeping everything hydrated during the heat of summer is the main task. I was surprised how well the tomatoes were doing too. 🙂

  2. Your tomatoes are early indeed! I just planted mine, some eggplant, peppers. I also have growing peas, cabbage, lettuce (yummy!), and onions. No real hot weather crops yet like cukes and melons but soon. It has bee cold!

I think that’s why my cukes haven’t sprouted yet, is the cold temps we’ve been having early in the am & late in the pm. Hmm…

  3. I really, really need to get some of my winter-sown veggies planted out. I use containers for many because of a certain groundhog, but I have the containers ready!! We had frost warnings the last three nights but I hope it will be OK here on out (knock wood, delusional thinking, etc.)

I use containers alot too, my beans & squash are currently occupying 5 large tubs. I also plan on putting herbs in a couple more smaller pots. Good luck! 🙂

  4. Hi Racquel! Everything looks good! The wooden fence provides additional warmth and wind protection.

Hi Tatyana, I think you are right about the fence giving some protection, plus the raised beds warm up a bit sooner than the ground would each spring. 🙂

  5. Looking good! I have tomatoes too…

Thanks Darla, it’s good to hear from you. Hope you are hanging in there. 🙂

  6. Racquel, I love raised beds, everything always looks so neat and tidy. Traditionally the 24th of May is the date of the last frost here, and a safe time to plant your veg.

Thanks, they are a bit easier to maintain too. They warm up a bit earlier than the ground does in the spring as well. Our last frost date is April 10th. 🙂

  7. Racquel, your garden seems so earl to me, but I guess you are in a warmer zone. Everything looks so healthy and those tomato blossoms already-wow. Have fun with your company and don’t forget to show them your lovely gardens. 🙂

Yep our last frost date is like April 10th, but it’s very rare for us to have any after the end of March. I was surprised to have blossoms too! 🙂 Thanks Beckie, it’s been hard finding time to get online.

  8. All your plants look so healthy Racquel. I just planted okra seed yesterday. I’ve never grown it before and now I’m not sure where I planted it receives enough sun. May have to build a bed in a different area.

I also planted cucumber, sweet banana, tomatoes and jalapeno peppers. I decided not to grow squash this year due to the bugs eating it up so bad last year.

Thanks Susie. Oh I want to try Okra too, but I’ll have to get another bed built first. 😉 Yep veggies need at least 6-8 hrs of sunlight. They require more care than my perennial beds I swear. Sounds like a nice crop you got started too.

  9. Nice looking garden. I laughed when I read about hubby building you another bed…gardeners are always wanting another bed-aren’t they? I keep trying to explain that to my hubby! 🙂

Thanks Linda. Yep we always need just a bit more space to plant more pretty or yummy things. lol 🙂

  10. Looks like you have planned out a great garden for another year of good eating.

I didn’t plant as many tomatoes this year as last, but I think I planted enough. I’ll see you tomorrow. 🙂

  11. Your raised beds look great, Racquel! I’ve barely started in my vegetable garden. Although I’ve talked to a few people around here who have already planted tomatoes, I think it’s much too early for us–our last frost date isn’t until May 15.

Thanks Rose, I don’t blame you for not starting too much with a last frost date of May 15th. Ours is like April 10th, but it’s rare for us to get one after the end of March. I waited till the second week of April to start my stuff this year. It’s worked out okay. 🙂
